Monday Book Club

Quiltsmart is such a wonderful product!
The companys focus is making traditional quilts
easy and available to any skill level of quilt maker.
New to their products is this newest book:
Rob Pete & Friends.....

Rob Pete & Friends has instructions for 10 different quilts, all using the same fusible interfacing which has the pattern printed directly onto it.
So instead of purchasing 10 different pattern packets, when you purchase the book the only repeat purchase you will be making is the Quiltsmart interfacing by the panel.
The book comes with enough interfacing to make a table runner.

I can't tell you how excited I am to have this book available.  Not only is it a super value, It is so exciting to see just a few of the possibilities available with this traditional melon shape.
Remember with Quiltsmart there are no curved seams to sew, making your dream of constructing this traditional quilt a reality.  Easy Peazy!!

So buy the book and try it out....or come take a class! Either way you will be amazed!

Square Dance (Revised Edition)
by Martha Thompson
Fancy Quilts from Plain Squares

The concepts within this book were first published in 1996 and became wildly popular which then lead to classes and workshops everywhere.

Martingale - Square Dance (Print version + eBook bundle)The amazing thing is every quilt design in the book originates from a simple square which is then sewn into a simple grid & then cut apart & sewn back together  where it magically creates layers of such beautiful designs.

You will find 11 projects plus a section at the end about designing your own creations.

You just have to sit down and study this book to even begin to unlock all the great potential it holds within it's pages. I am always amazed how differently our minds work and the incredible ideas that are continually popping up in the quilting world.

I am definitely excited to try this concept out.
I say give it a look!

a batch of QuiltSoup.....by Barbara J. Jones

Martingale - A Batch of QuiltSoup (Print version + eBook bundle)

QuiltSoup designs are just so much fun.  They describe them as both charming & whimsical.
I would have to agree.  Applique' is their forte and so they have developed their own method to accomplish the applique patterns.  They include a complete class on how to needle turn applique the QuiltSoup way within the pages of this book.
There are 9 patterns that combine piecing and applique.
The photos are beautiful, the instructions are clear and precise.
You will love the fresh color combinations as well as the charming designs.  They are all so yummy you will have trouble deciding which to make first.

Martingale - Homestyle Quilts (Print version + eBook bundle)

Homestyle Quilts....simple patterns & savory recipes by Kim Diehl & Laurie Baker.

This book combines our love of classic patchwork with wonderful recipes.
If you know Kim Diehl you love her warm colors and style of quilting.  Her work envokes the feeling of  masterpieces from times past.  Her quilts beckon you to wrap up in them with a warm cup of cocoa.
Everyone needs a few of these in their collection.

I especially love that she keeps the patterns simple and adds machine applique for an added feeling of charm.
This book is a fun collaboration between Kim & Laurie.  It shows off both of their strengths as quilt makers & designers.

Successful Scrap Quilts from Simple Rectangles

Successful Scrap Quilts from Simple Rectangles.....by Judy Turner & Margaret Rolfe

It always amazes me how you can take a simple shape & build an entire quilt collection rich in color, pattern & design based solely on one particular shape.

This book concentrates on the rectangle, So how versatile is the rectangle?
You will be amazed!  This book really got my creative juices flowing!

You will find a section on color theory & using key elements to achieve your desired result.
Then there is a section on designs using rectangles, individual blocks and their reoccurring patterns when placed in a variety of block layouts.
I found this extremely exciting & helpful in designing my own creations.

Then you move on to the project section where block construction is covered as well as quilt construction, then lastly the specific quilt projects designed to make a completed quilt from a particular design.  There are 15 projects in the book & a million more from your own creation.

Take a look at this book as a foundation for your quilting library.

Modern Designs for Classic Quilts....by Kelly Biscopink & Andrea Johnson

This book is so great for the newer more modern quilter who longs to tackle those traditional quilting patterns while adding their modern twist through fabric choices.

One of the most exciting aspects about this book is in the very detailed instruction in the front of the book.  it covers each technique you will need to know to complete each project.

Disappearing 4-Patch, Flying Gees, Postage Stamp, Spider web, Log Cabin, Hexagons, New York Beauty, Dresden Plate, are a few of the things you will learn.  12 Traditionally inspired patterns.

I would highly recommend this well designed, very informative book.  The bonus is your going to want to make each and every project in the book......
Now from a book reviewer/collector like me, How often does that happen?

In The Meadow.....by Barb Adams & Alma Allen of Blackbird Designs

These ladies always produce such beautiful designs & projects.
There is nothing they do that I haven't fallen in love with at first flip of the page.

Beautiful Applique' & timeless designs.

You will find two quilts "Birdsong" & "Friends of a Feather" which are done using the same blocks but different fabric choices.  It is so amazing how different they each look.  I think this would be such fun to work together as an applique' group on.

There are 5 other projects featuring applique' & piecing.
All the projects feature things you would expect to see in the meadow.

If you love birds, wild flowers, butterflies and a huge dose of charm, you will love this book!

Bright & Bold Cozy Modern Quilts by Kim Schaefer

Kim has authored a number of books, all equally inviting in format and content.
I especially enjoyed "Quilts from Textured & Solids" and "Cozy Modern Quilts".

This book is an extension to her first "Cozy Modern Quilts" book.          Again I loved the layout and clear instructions.  The construction of each project in this book uses two simple shapes the Square & the Rectangle    to construct each project.

She has used scrappy fabric selections to demonstrate that you can sew these with your stash.
You will find Lap quilts, Wall quilts & Table runners.  All easily adaptable to what ever size you are in need of. The fresh use of brighter more modern fabrics is a feast for the eyes.
However each design could be reinvented with any fabric style choice.

There are 20 projects &
the book is priced under $20
What a value....$1 per project!

This would make a great gift with a Fat 8th stack of starter fabrics.

Maybe a great group quilt along and fabric or block trade.

I am so excited about the possibilities.  You will be too....give it a look!

Monday Book Club

We had double books last week so I don't really feel like this book got the attention it deserved, so here it is again!

TRANSPARENCY QUILTS by Weeks Ringle & Bill Kerr

This book and the concepts it teaches is so fascinating!
You will master the illusion of transparency as you work through
the 10 quilt projects in this book.

This is such a great study on color and fabric choices.
The designs are sophisticated with a soft, graphic look.

I can't wait to work my way through this book.

The attention to detail is very predictable for these two authors.
If you have followed them at all you will know that they always
produce books and projects of a high quality.

They have been professional quilters and teachers for many years,
they are very impressively published as well as authors of numerous
books. They are also the co-founders of Modern Quilt Studio

Check them out at  www.modernquiltstudio.com

And check out this wonderful book!

STOP. GO. QUILT. SEW! by Angela Yosten

6670149201_702081db46_z

The focus of this book is 12 projects for Boys to enjoy!
While boys may be a great target group for these projects,
I think they could be tweaked for anyone who likes
the graphic nature of signs and striped patchwork.

This is a very fun book with cheerful projects all done in
very cheerful fabrics and color combinations.

Full sized patterns are included.  Photos and instructions are very
inviting  You will find pillows, bedding, bathroom, clothing & more.

Combine these projects to make a number of traffic themed rooms.
I think they would combine to make an awesome casual great room,
with an IKEA  / Pottery Barn Kids & Teen feel.

They just make me smile!

Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters

Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters: Choose & Use Quilting Designs on Modern Quilts

I was very excited to see this book come into the store.
With all the buzz about Modern Quilting, it is hard to decided how to quilt
these quilts so they look a little more graphic and edgy.

Picking the right quilting for each top and design is the never ending challenge.
The right quilting can make the quilt.

She has step by step instructions for 28 different quilting designs.
There are instructions for those who will be quilting on a home sewing machine as
well as a long arm machine.

With a little practice you will be quilting your own quilt tops in no time.

I found this to be a very good over-view on machine quilting.
It is a great reference book to have in your library.

Fantastic illustrations, photos and informational material.
LOVED IT!

Quilts from The House of TULA PINK by Tula Pink

I have been waiting for this book to come into the store so I could devour every page!

Tula Pink is such a creative genius........she loves design more than structure and rules, she is fiercely brave in her discovery of unique techniques for construction.

Many of the quilts and projects (there are 20 of them) have a more modern flair, but pair your slightly dated fabrics with a fresh current solid and you'll have a great creation.

The patterns, instructions and layouts are hand sketched instead of computer generated which gives the book a real artistic feeling.

She takes great care to include tips on choosing and combining fabrics,
selecting a quilting motif, and even sketching your own fabric designs.

This is such a fun and interesting book, with many quilts I am itching to create.  I hope you take a look for yourself!

Fast and Fun FIRST QUILTS by Sara Diepersloot

Martingale - Fast and Fun First Quilts (Print version + eBook bundle)

I love the title alone on this book.
It says......18 Projects for Instant Gratification!

Now who wouldn't go for that?

These quilts use large pieces, strip piecing, and simple techniques.
They are simple yet stylish.

Sometimes starting to quilt can be intimidating and a book like this with these
great designs can have you on your way in no time.

Photos and layouts are great, instructions are easy to understand.
The author has included an alternate color way for your interest.

I think these would make fun quick quilts for gifting, or the book
would make a great gift for that blossoming quilter in your life.
Put it with a few fat quarters and "Perfection".....
What more could you want?

"We Love Color"....by 16 Iconic Designers

This book is both a tribute and a celebration of "Kona Cotton Solids"
The introduction to the book is very interesting as it explains the history
as well as the process of producing this Iconic quilting solid.

The projects in this book are a partnership of 16 leading designers in the
Modern Quilt Movement who created quilts using Kona Cotton exclusively.

I think you will come away inspired and excited to use more solids in your
quilting projects.

I really loved examining each quilt closely, especially the quilting.
I just love the graphic qualities in each creation.

Photos are wonderful, Instructions are clear and easy to follow.
The quilts range from beginner to advanced in construction.

The back of the book holds an interview with Denyse Schmidt as
well as short bio's. on each of the designers.

What will you do with the more than 200 colors of Kona Cotton?

Applique' With Attitude by Piece O' Cake Designs

Applique With Attitude
I don't know about you, but I am a huge fan of these gals.
Within the pages of this newest book, you will find 10 projects which are done with a little twist on their applique' method.

They have used big stitches in Perle cotton which are meant to be seen.
It is much faster, adds new texture to each piece & is just plain fun!

There are pillows, wall hangings, table toppers and a quilt or two.

The wonderful thing is each design could work into a larger quilt by simply combining the blocks you love with a few filler blocks & improvisational piecing.

These are just so fun, perky and bright, they will capture your heart.
Full size templates, great instructions and fantastic photos.

So get out and try some "Applique' With Attitude"!
