Monday Book Club

The feature book for today is..... Drum Roll.....
Coming Home by Jo Morton

Just close your eyes and imagine the quilts with
names like Hickory Hill & Shenandoah...
There are very few designers who do
1800's reproduction like Jo Morton.

The projects in this book have a very classy
period look.  I wanted to make every one.
Take a looksie, I don't think you will be disappointed!

Monday Book Club

I must confess, I love vintage quilts....Heck I love
anything vintage.  Each wonderful treasure holds a
story all it's own.  Now if they could only speak!

Piecing The Past...
Vintage quilts recreated by Kansas Troubles

Is a collection of vintage quilts that have been
recreated so we can each make one for our very own.

The quilts are terrific and the history, stories &
other memorabilia are so charming.  You will
love reading the book as much as working
up one or all of the wonderful projects you
will find in this treasure of a quilt book.

Enjoy!!  I know I did...

Monday Book Club

This Monday we have a special treat!

Our feature book is "Hobo Quilts"
by Debra G. Henninger

I first heard about this book from a friend and work colleague.
She had seen the book while at Quilt Market in Minnesota.
I was so intrigued and charmed by the description she
gave of the book, I couldn't wait until it came to the shop.

Much like the quilt books about the Underground Railroad,
This book focuses on the secret clues & symbols of the
Depression Era American Hobo who set out riding the
rails searching for work.
I loved the historic photos, the interesting stories and......

Oh yes the quilt blocks!

It really opened my eyes to how hard times
were during the depression and the people who
risked everything to find work.

Loved this book!

Broadbent's is starting A "Hobo Quilt Club"...
Purchase the book + $20 per month for 6 months
That gets you 10 block kits each month.

Bring in your finished blocks and get..
25% off your sashing, borders & back.
(Regular retail price)

Your going to love it!

Don't delay, we only cut 18 kits.

Monday Book Club

The choice for today is a little different....
I wouldn't exactly call it a book, more a
pattern.  But it's so darn cute!

I first saw this when I went to a super
great quilting retreat last February.

Halloween seemed so far away then,
Now I clicked my red heels 3 times &
summer is nearly over.

Halloween
is just around the corner.

I just love the possibilities this pattern
offers.  Warm, cosy & a little bit vintage.

I don't think you can go wrong with
Blackbird Designs.......and

"Hallowe'en 1904"

Monday Book Club #5

This is a great book for those of you
who love applique' a little more on
the whimsical side of things.

Piece O' Cake Designs
has been bringing us great
fresh applique'
for quite a few years.

This book and it's patterns are
different as they are all done
without exact measurements,
and exact patterns.  Intriguing?
Well I thought so....

As always the graphics and pictures
are so great.  They capture the
fantastic use of color and
instructions teach you how to
achieve bursts of color
that will bring your creations
alive.

The projects are all delicious!

Give it a whirl, I am sure you
will find joy in their
"No Rules...No Ruler" technique

as you...
Applique' Outside the Lines!

Monday Book Club #4

At first glance this book might
strike you as really nothing special....
Some may quickly flip through
looking at the projects and hoping
for some unique tidbit to spur their
imagination...
My nature is to digest every single
page.  Reading through as if it were
a great novel.
The style in this book is
primitive design and applique'

The introduction is so charming,
one snippet from it... quote
"This book is not intended to teach
you how to make "perfect" quilts.
But if you want to make quilts
for the pure joy of creating,
if you want to enjoy the journey not
just the destination, and if this book
gives you the freedom to make "mistakes"
(and not fee obligated to automatically
rip them out!), it will have served
it's purpose."

Wow what a powerful statement!

My 3 favorite project from the book
are: Chocolate-covered Churn Dashes,
Autumn Equinox & Flowers in The Snow.

Hope you enjoy!

Monday Book Club #3

It seems that in order to be a serious quilter
You need a STASH....
What is a stash?  Well it is fabric,
collected over time, fabric that speaks
to your inner soul and begs you to
collect it for that some-day perfect
project.

Soon you have this eclectic collection
of fabrics, and no idea what to use
them for...
Let me tell you, Leaders and Enders
is the answer to your problem
of the ever growing STASH.

Then it comes time to manicure your stash
http://www.stashmanicure.blogspot.com/

Bonnie Hunter has worked her system over the years
to use scraps, recycled clothing, and yardage to
construct block components while you are
sewing other projects.

Love this book & her blog http://www.quiltville.blogspot.com/

Hurray for scrappy, happy, quilts!!!

Monday Book Club #2

Many of you may be familiar with Miss Rosie's Quilt Co.
and the awesome quilts that Carrie Nelson designs.

There has been quite a following for her small quilts
called "Schnibbles".
So much to my joy and excitement when I found out
she was publishing a book called

"Schnibbles times Two".

While the book concentrates on making quilts
from 5" or 10" squares,
the patterns can be used as terrific stash busters.

There are 12 quilts and each is offered in two sizes.

As usual her instructions and illustrations are wonderful.
Carrie also adds her delightful comments and explanations
throughout the book.

Can I say that the book was everything I expected and more!!

Side note:  If you ever get the chance to attend a trunk show
or lecture by Carrie Nelson, don't miss it.
She is such a delightful person, so warm and friendly.
She always delivers a lecture you will remember,
and her quilts are as exquisite!

Monday Book Club #1

So here is our first book club book!

I first saw this book about a year ago.
It is one of those rare beauties that from
first to last page you just can't put it down.
Someone might think I was reading a steamy
romance novel the way I clung to every page
and had to keep wiping the drool from my mouth.

Every photograph, every graphic, every instruction....Impeccable!
Remember it's been a year and I am
still singing the praises of this book.
Take a look....I don't think you'll be sorry!

Machine Applique'

Carmen has found time in her busy schedule for a few summer classes.
We will not be offering this class again until next year.
Take advantage of this great opportunity.

Class scheduled:  Saturday, June 12th  10:00-2:00

This is one of our most popular classes. If you have ever put off making a quilt with applique' fear no more. You will be awed and amazed by this technique'! I'm telling you "Don't miss out"!
This is the recommended book for the class.

You will want is as a reference after taking the class,

but it is not necessary for the class. $24.95

This is a sample from a previous class. The pattern is for a flower wreath similar to the picture. Then Carmen added the triangle setting to turn it into a small wall hanging. Your project will be totally suited to you as you will pick out the fabrics and bring them to class.

Baby Crackers

This traditional block is created using the Square in a Square
method of piecing.  No little pieces, everything is done using
strips and squares.  You'll love it!

1930's type prints.  I use Kona Snow for the
background solid.  It's cute 100% of the time!
